Hike Laguna Queshque 2022
Quesquecocha name means “lake of the puya”. This excursion takes us to the secluded Queshque and Trancaruri valleys, which are located in the southern section of the Huascaran National Park, about 10 km east of Catac.
Superb mountain vistas of the Cordillera Blanca’s jagged summits, including those of Mount Cashan (5716m), Shaqsha (5703m), Huantsan (6395m) and Uruashraju (5722m), can be enjoyed on the drive up, and occasionally herds of vicuñas can be spotted grazing on the vast expanses of ichu grass in the valleys of this part of the range.
Once we near our destination, extraordinary vegetation appears: the Puya Raimondi – a rare plant that can reach up to 12 m in height and that is only found in a few isolated valleys of the Andes – covers the steep rocky slopes surrounding us.

- Our hike starts near Lake Queshquecocha, a magical place where birds of all sorts – eagles, falcons, mountain caracaras and hummingbirds – can be observed in large numbers and at close range.
- We can also see the beautiful snow-capped peaks of Mount Pongos (5680m) and Mururaju (5688m) rising high above the turquoise waters of the lake.
- After a short walk, another lagoon comes into view – Lake Jarapococha – bordered by the region’s largest forest of Puya Raimondi, a truly terrific sight, especially with the several species of hummingbirds that come and feed on the nectar of the plants’ thousands of flowers.
This relatively easy hike gives Guides the rare opportunity to visit some of the Cordillera Blanca’s most untouched and seldom visited valleys. - We have lunch in this idyllic and peaceful spot before making our way back to the starting point, where our vehicle is waiting.
